Basics
Seiichirou at work (movie)"X" is the story of fourteen people fated to war against each other in the year 1999, the promised time of the end of the world. On one side are the Seven Seals, the Ten no Ryuu (Dragons of Heaven), who wish to preserve humanity's existence on earth. On the other are the Seven Angels (also called the Seven Minions), the Chi no Ryuu (Dragons of Earth), who have taken (or rather, in both cases, have been chosen by Fate) the side of the earth and seek to destroy humanity so that nature may re-claim the planet.

Aoki Seiichirou is one of the Seven Seals, and thus a proponent of mankind's continued existence. A far cry from the Ten no Ryuu's clerics and magic users whose lives center around their fates and abilities, Seiichirou works as a magazine editor and his happily married with a wife and a young daughter. Seiichirou is one of the few adults among the group of close-knit teenagers and has taken on the role of a father figure, in particular to youngest member Nekoi Yuzuriha. He is gentle, caring, non-judgmental, and loyal to both his cause and his family, attributes that have caught the eye of fellow Seal Kasumi Karen. Not to be over-looked is his skill as a wind master, likewise winning Seiichirou idolization from his nephew, Daisuke. He makes his first appearance in volume 3.

His full-name is made up of five characters. Ao means 'pale blue', but has secondary meanings of 'old/hoary and 'hurried/flurried'. Ki means 'track' or 'path'. Sei means 'conquer' and has connotations associated with subjugating and attacking. Ichi, of course, is 'one'. Rou is 'billow' or 'wave', and 'wander'. Seiichirou's character is based on CLAMP's real-life "Asuka" editor at Kadokawa Shoten; they share the same name as well as the same job. This is one of a few running in-jokes in "X", in which characters are named after real people (or pets) that CLAMP knows.

My interest in Seiichirou comes from how strikingly ordinary he seems yet how unordinary his life really is. He is the quintessential how-well-do-you-know-your-neightbor character, a seemingly average person caught up in a cosmic struggle for the future. Such characters have always fascinated me, and of all of cast of "X" Seiichirou typifies this the most. He'd be right at home in Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman". That, and I simply like him. He's kind, loyal, and caring as well as a strong and resilient fighter. I couldn't help but get into his character when I first read "X". With that in mind, I suppose it's funny that my other favorite male character is...Seishirou. Eheheheh.
