Tarot
The Hierophant (also known as The Pope or The High Priest) represents growth and learning
within a group or structured belief system. When we are young, the two greatest influences in
our lives are our mother, represented by the Empress (Kanoe), and our father, represented by
the Emperor (Monou Kyougo). However, there comes a point when we step outside of our family and
into the world. It is here that The Hierophant comes into play. Our immediate reaction is to
become one with the group and to adhere to the teachings of the community. The Hierophant
represents learning within a group, creating a system of beliefs influenced by others,
conforming, and identifying with the whole
(Bunning, Learning the Tarot).
The card stresses such things as institution
and structure. The two bowing figures on the card are acolytes being brought into the group, where they
will play a role in its destiny. In readings, the Hierophant represents the beginning (or
ending) of a relationship. It is reinforced by the Emperor and opposed by the Fool (Monou Saya)
and the Lovers (Kotori & Kamui).
