Why, now, blow wind, swell billow and swim bark!
The storm is up and all is on the hazard!
- Shakespeare, Julius Caeser
Wind
Of the 14 Judgment Day combatants, four have power over the cardinal
elements. The Chi no Ryuu have enlisted Kigai Yuuto, who controls water, and Shiryuu Kusanagi, who controls earth. On the side of the Ten no Ryuu are Kasumi Karen the
red-light firecracker and, of course, Aoki Seiichirou, a wind master (kazetsukai). Interestingly, fire traditionally foils water and air, representing the sky, foils earth. It
adds some meaning to the battle between Seiichirou and Kusanagi in the TV series.
The ability to control wind runs in the family; Seiichirou's nephew Daisuke also
shares this power, but his skills aren't nearly as polished as his uncle's. When asked how
one becomes stronger by Daisuke, Seiichirou states that one must have something he or she wishes
to protect. Members of the Wind Clan of Ise, he says, have such power to protect the one person in
their lives that they love the most. Their power grows stronger as their heart does, and if
their devotion to the one they love does not waver, their power will grow stronger. Seiichirou's
devotion is to Shimako, his wife. If he is indeed the most powerful member of his family, then
his love for Shimako must be incredibly strong. And fierce.
Under Seiichirou's control, wind acts as a both a strong protective shield and a
deadly weapon. He's capable of fending off attacks from equally powerful opponents, such as
Yuuto, though his strength has yet to be tested against someone stronger (like Fuuma or one of the Sakurazukamori). On the offensive, Seiichirou can command wind like
razors, as he does the men in black that attack him and Arashi during their first meeting. In what action he has seen, though, he has worked chiefly on defensive. He is often
paired up with Karen, who leads the offense.
In terms of power ranking for the Ten no Ryuu I would place Seiichirou in the
middle, on
the same level as Karen, below Kamui, Subaru, and Sorata but above Arashi and Yuzuriha. Why?
The first three all possess very strong physical offense/defense skills as well as equally
powerful psychic/spiritual skills - the latter of which Seiichirou lacks. Some could argue that
Arashi also possesses both physical and spiritual skills. However, Arashi used her spiritual
skills only once at the beginning of the series and not for combat (she held her hands up in
a triangle to see the true identities of the men in black), and her physical attack skills are
limited to only short range combat, whereas Seiichirou is capable of both short and long range combat.
Yuzuriha, thus far, relies solely on her ability to erect a kekkai and the powers of her inugami Inuki; unlike Seiichirou, her unique talents are not her own.
As for being on par with Karen, though he hasn't done much offense work, his defense skills
match evenly with her offense. In this respect they compliment one another, as Karen does very little defense work herself.
